San Francisco - toured the catacombs

Sunday, June 13th

Today we got up early, packed our bags, and headed to the airport for a 10:20am flight to Lima, Peru. Greg, Liam, and Kim had problems initially. For some reason, their return flights had been cancelled. LAN Airlines had made a mistake. When our bags didn't make the flight to Lima originally, it was assumed they had not made the flight either. Thus, the rest of their trip was deleted. They were able to work things out - all was smooth again by the time we boarded our plane in Cusco.

We got into Lima around 11:30am. We were met by our guide and then took a 45-minute bus ride to a hotel in the Miroflores area of Lima. We checked in quickly and walked down to the ocean for lunch. Nice lunch. They had dancers performing again after we finished eating. We stayed here until about 3:30pm

We next boarded a tour bus for a 3-hr tour of Lima. Interesting. One of the most memorable things was when we toured the catacombs beneath the San Francisco site. Eerie, creepy. There were bones and skulls laying around. We were told that the bodies were placed ontop of each other, naked, with a layer of cement between them to aid in the decay process. The femurs and skulls were really the only remains - as the other bones had become dust. Freaky stuff. We walked around the main town square, took a unique tour of one of the governmental houses, and saw a parade in the streets.

These 3 hours were short, but I was able to get a feel for Lima. Our guide told us that Lima has come a long way in the past 20 years. It's now a place where people want to come again. It used to be a place where folks left for the US, Brazil, Chile, etc.

We made our way back to the hotel - 6:30pm. We had to leave at 10pm for our international flight to Miami (leaving at 12:20am). We took this time to grab some dinner near the ocean. It was a great dinner - just the 4 of us - completing the journey on a high note. A bus ride to the airport, some good-byes to the group, and we were set to board our flight as Sunday ended.
