A really tough day out there today. Raining all morning, 2 big climbs (Smarts Mountain and Mt Cube), 4,191’ vertical gain, and really slick, technical rocks most of the day.

Sam, Dexter, Pearl, and myself all started out together. We actually got separated pretty early and then reconnected atop Mt. Cube (we had to call the Hostal to get a pickup on top of the mountain because there was no signal at the parking area).

The distance we wanted to hike today worked perfectly to stay at the Barn Door Hostal. $22 for a bunk out of the rain - couldn’t pass it up. We got in pretty late (about 6:30pm) - because we had to go painfully slow on the course due to the slick conditions. I was happy to be finished without injury. Pearl took a pretty nasty spill - some cuts/bruises - but she’ll be OK.

One more day left before we actually reach the Whites. Tomorrow will be a shorter 10 mile effort. Sam’s friend will be picking us up after the hike and transferring us to Lincoln. Sam is staying with her friend - I’ll be in a hotel. Lincoln will be our home base a couple days as we get started in the Whites.

I haven’t been overly specific on particular peaks/mountains on trail to this point; however, I plan to list out all the 4,000’ peaks we climb in NH moving forward. It’s such a well known hiking destination - I want to remember which peaks I’ll be climbing for future reference.

Here’s to some better weather tomorrow. Good night from New Hampshire!
