Coming to you live from the Berkshire Lakeside Lodge - Mile #1553.1 on the AT. I’m just about halfway through the state of Massachusetts.  There has been a rainy weather pattern the past few days. I was able to make it to the Lodge before the big afternoon thunderstorms rolled in. It’s expected to rain overnight and then clear a bit tomorrow- before more rain on Friday. In the summer - the rain keeps it cooler, but it brings major bugs, treacherous footing, and rain-soaked shoes. A little rain is OK - but I could do without the 3-4 hour rain events.

I got started early this morning - on the trail a little before 6am. I like getting it going early when I’m tenting. I’m usually not sleeping anyway - might as well get an early start before the heat sets in. Starting this early - I can usually have 12 miles in the bank by noon. That leaves me with a reasonable afternoon

No chores today. I’ve just been resting since my arrival around 3pm. I ordered a pizza and took a couple hour nap. With my current state - feeling really exhausted - I’m going to try to hit a few more hotels when possible to catch up on some much needed sleep.

The course today wasn’t too bad. I had a 1,200’ climb early - then a bunch of rolling hills the rest of the day. Tomorrow is a flatter section. I’m hoping the terrain is smooth - if so - I should be able to hold a quicker pace. I’m thinking about doing another hotel tomorrow if I can make it 19-1/2 miles. Sometimes going a bit farther to get good rest is worth it - we’ll see how the day plays out.

I only saw 1 other hiker all day - early this morning around 7am. He was a section hiker just going to the next shelter. It’s weird I haven’t run into anyone the past 2 days.

Goodnight from New England. Here’s some sayings to leave you with:

“Pahk the cah in Hahvahd Yahd - use yah blinkah - bang a uey - wicked good for yah”
