Italy - Dolomites - Day #11

Sunday, August 16th

Refugio Coldai to Refugio Vazzoler

1,400’ vertical

6.5 miles

It’s 3pm - I’m currently resting in the bottom bunk of a 4-person dorm in Refugio Vazzoler.  This place is great!!  One of the top 2 Refugios on the entire trip. There’s a bunch of folks here that we have spent some time with over the course of the trip.  Dinner/drinks should be great tonight.  This trip is interesting - as nearly everyone has a different itinerary - so you’re meeting new people all the time - but haven’t spent consistent time with anyone.  Every couple days you end up staying at the same place as someone you met 2 days prior.

Today was a shorter day for us - so we added another 1.2 miles and 400’ gain to grab some breakfast at Refugio Tissi (about 3 miles into the hike).  The hike overall was rolling hills and we ended the day on a descent - which was a pleasant change from most days on our trip.

We ended up getting to the Refugio about noon.  We’re getting efficient at chores - as we were checked in, showered, and eating lunch by about 1pm.  This place has an incredible outside seating area - with stunning views.  The mountains are so close - it feels like you can almost reach out and touch them.

Tomorrow (Monday) is our last hiking day and then we fly back to the US on Tuesday - and I’ll be in the office on Wednesday.  The trip has flown by - but it’s been really incredible.  The Dolomites are a place I could t recommend more.  The vibes are great, the people are friendly, and the views are breathtaking.

I’ll check in later - dinner is set for 6:30pm.  We’re going to head outside soon to meet up with the crew and just enjoy the night.

9pm - a great dinner to end our Refugio stays for the Dolomites!   Really nice conversations with a couple from North Carolina, 2 girls from New Zealand, and a couple girls from Philadelphia/New York.  So many different hiking trips - almost nobody has a similar agenda.

Tomorrow is Greg’s B-Day   Hoping for an excellent hiking day and then we’ll end the day in Belluno - over a perfect celebration dinner.

Good night from the Dolomites!!
