1 day down in the Whites. Mt. Moosilauke (4,802’) completed! It was a challenging ascent out of the gates this morning - but not too bad overall today. This was a great introduction to what the White Mountains have in store for me. Aggressive, steep climbs - with above tree line peaks exposed to the elements
The day started with a 6:15am pickup at my hotel. Jeanette drove Sam and I to the trailhead. We took the ascent slow and steady - arriving at the peak around 10am. We enjoyed the scenery and had some lunch at the peak. While we were there - a guy summitted for his 48th and final peak in NH. It was really cool to talk with him and see his excitement and enthusiasm. He had brought his family and friends with him to celebrate completing the 48 peaks in NH above 4,000’. What an accomplishment!
After our break - we headed down the mountain. We ran into Pearl and Dexter - they were ascending going Nobo. We stopped for a bit and talked with them. They will be hiking with us tomorrow. The final 3 miles of the descent leveled out and went fast. We got to the parking area at 1:30pm - early for our 2pm pickup by Jeanette
Once Jeanette picked us up - we went by the grocery store. I had to resupply and get food for my hotel room. We then went out for ice cream to celebrate Day #1 in the Whites. I got back to my hotel room about 4pm. I took a nap and have been resting all night.
The plan is to do a 16.4 mile slackpack day over South and North Kinsman tomorrow - 2 more 4,000’ peaks. Then - Tuesday is scheduled for a Zero day. So - I’ll be staying in the same hotel 2 more nights (Monday & Tuesday). Sam and I will be headed northbound again on Wednesday with full packs. We then have a 6-day plan of 75 miles to get us to Mile #1894 (just 17 miles from Maine) on Monday, July 27th. Then - another potential Zero Day - pending how we feel.
Little goals each day. Keep focused - keep moving forward! Today I passed the 1800 mile marker. 389 miles to go!
Keep it strong out there!
