Day #7 - Everest BaseCamp

 Day #7 - Everest BaseCamp

Itinerary- Namche Bazar - Zero Day

Elevation:  11,319’

It’s 4:45pm - I’m currently sitting on a cushioned bench seat - laying against a cushioned backrest - in a warm, stove-heated lounge in the Mountain View Hotel in Namche Bazar (elevation 11,319’). This is as close to euphoric bliss one can get while hiking the Everest BaseCamp Trek.

The lounge is filled with many of my co-trekkers, our Sherpa team, our guide - the atmosphere is warm, inviting, inclusive, friendly - all good stuff.

It’s been a great Zero Day - but it wasn’t all rest and recovery.  We started the day with breakfast at 7am.  We then got our bags ready so the porters could move our gear to our new hotel.  We left for an exploratory trek at 8:30am.

We first took in the market - filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat.  We then trekked up the hillside to a location of an old airport that once served Namche Bazar.  I mentioned this is a Zero Day - meaning we gained no positive distance on our approach to Everest BaseCamp.  However, unlike on the AT trail where I generally bellied up on Zero Days with little to no exertion - we actually climbed 1,000’ today and probably walked 3-4 miles.  In the mountains - it’s often a strategy to hike high and sleep low to aid in the overall acclimation process.  We actually hiked to an elevation where we’ll be sleeping tomorrow night and then descended to 11,319’ (where we slept last night)

After the hillside trek - we went down to Sagarmatha National Park - and visited a museum - walking around for about an hour.  It was snowing at this time - so our visibility was nonexistent to the mountains that surrounded us.  This was unfortunate - as the museum location was supposed to be the first view of Mt Everest.  No worries- we’ll have plenty more opportunities.

After the museum, we headed back to the hotel, got checked in, and had lunch with a hot cup of lemon tea (which is becoming addictive).   Lunches/dinners have consisted mostly of rice/noodle dishes with some cooked vegetables. It’s been really good for the most part.  Breakfast is usually some kind of oatmeal with eggs/bread.

After lunch, Greg and I went into the village so I could get a replacement trekking pole.  $30 for a new set - the prices here are incredibly favorable.  The trekking pole set that broke cost $180.  Hopefully these will make it through the trip. We then went into a cafe and joined a bunch of our fellow hikers. We enjoyed a cup of tea and a brownie - and caught up on some of the worldly news that was on TV.

A few more pictures and another leisurely stroll through the village - we headed back to the hotel.  It’s 5:15pm now and I’m in the lounge.  Dinner will be served around 6:30pm.

Tomorrow we have a longer trek (9miles) - but only gain about 1,400’.  I’m ready to get it going.  Last night I slept incredibly well for 6 hours until 3am - but was dozing on/off the rest of the night until 6am.  I had a little headache when I awoke.  I took a couple of ibuprofen.  I haven’t taken the Diamox yet - but I’m monitoring things and can start this medication at any time.

I’m feeling good with the legs and overall body.  My biggest concerns right now are handling the altitude and the cold.  I get headaches on occasion- so my morning headache could be a number of things.  It’s just so hard to pinpoint - and I’m always battling the fears of getting sick.  I just need to be aware - and stay on top of things.  I did really well on the hike today - I’m certainly not the fastest guy out there - but I remain consistent.  For me - my success lies in more of a mental game than being a physical specimen.

Stay relaxed - stay focused - enjoy the moment.  This is what I keep telling myself.

To good health and good strength!  Goodnight from Namche Bazar!

Day #6 - Everest BaseCamp

Itinerary- Phakding to Namche Bazar

Elevation:  8,661’ to 11,319’

It’s 6:20pm - sitting in the lounge of the Comfort Inn in Namche Bazar.  It’s not a Comfort Inn that we all our familiar with - this place is less than spectacular.   The bathroom (which is community) requires you turn the water on manually to fill the tank - there’s also a layer of ice on the floor - we may need to wear microspikes in the middle of the night.

Honestly - my expectations are quite low with regard to accommodations.  The fact we have a building to sleep in and something other than an outhouse - A+ stuff.  There’s no heat (there won’t be heat anywhere we stay), you can buy internet for $5 - but it’s barely functional, rooms have lights and electrical outlets- but the lights have burned out bulbs and produce little light while the electrical plug only works if the adapter is secured with some outside device.

(Note - we were just told we’ll be moving places in the morning due to the conditions!)

I’m currently laying in my sleeping bag at 7:50pm after dinner.  It’s probably 20 degrees in my room (still rooming with Warren). I’m basically writing the blog inside the bag to keep from freezing. We’re at 11,319’ - and weather is coming in tomorrow.  Expected snow tomorrow afternoon and overnight - maybe around 3-4 inches.

Tomorrow is a Zero Day.  It’s scheduled as a planned rest day in Namche Bazar to allow for proper acclimitization as we continue to higher elevations.  We’re still set to go out on a couple excursions to get the blood flowing, visit a monastery, and hopefully get our first views of Everest.

Today was a really solid effort.  We hiked 7 miles, was on trail 8 hours, and did roughly 2,700’ of vertical ascent.  The views continue to impress as we make our way up the Khumba Valley.  We have been walking across a number of bridges which span from one cliff face to the other.  As you’re walking across, the bridge is swaying and moving under your feet.  I can’t look down at the raging river and rocks below - I just face forward and keep moving slowly.  On one of the bridges - S2Mountaineering had provided a prayer flag that we all signed.  The prayer flags were then strung out on the bridge and secured for years to come. Very cool - my name will be on a prayer flag for all future Everest climbers as they head up the mountain.

I’m feeling pretty good - all things considered.  The rest day tomorrow is huge.  I’m only 6,300’ from Everest BaseCamp - but it’s another 6 days before we get there.  I really like how they have set up the schedule - it maximizes are chances of success.

Keep the Faith!   To health and strength - in getting me through this journey.

Day #5 - Everest BaseCamp

 Day #5 - Everest BaseCamp

Wednesday, February 23rd

Itinerary- Lukla to Phakding

Elevation:  9,350’ to 8,661’

The kidding around is over!!  Coming to you live from a hut in Phakding - at an elevation of 8,661’.  It’s 4:15pm - we finished our hike today at 3pm.  I’ve been getting my room organized for the past hour.  Now I’m chilling in the lounge with a bunch of our group.  I’m periodically writing and talking - it’s a really relaxing time of day.

Today started at 4am.  We caught a shuttle to the airport at 5am for a 6:30am flight from Kathmandu to Lukla.  If you read any descriptions on the Everest BaseCamp trek - you’ll often hear many stories about the Lukla flight - as in “one of the most dangerous/terrifying flights in the world”. Lukla’s airport is on the side of a mountain with a very small runway.  There’s little room for error by the pilots.  Plus, you’re in this extremely small plane, packed in like sardines, going down the Khumbu Valley between huge mountains that often generate low layers of fog and clouds.  Good news - we made it safely!!!!

The weather today was absolutely spectacular. We stayed in Lukla for a couple of hours before starting our trek to allow for the coordination of the yak team (which are carrying our bags to our final destination each day).   We had breakfast and took a ton of pictures while walking around the town.

We started our trek about 9am.  The itinerary indicated 4.4 miles - we actually went 6.5 miles. The trek took 5 hours. We had a 647’ ascent and a 1,459’ descent.  We grabbed lunch for about an hour midway through the hike.  Hopefully the pictures tell the story - it was unreal scenery working our way through the Valley.

The 1 bad thing about today - there was a section of trail under construction- so we had to do this bypass.  The bypass was up/down this sketchy hill with tons of mud and really slick conditions.  I fell once - no big deal.  But then I tripped again - saved it with my trekking pole - only to completely break off the handle of one of my poles.  I’m going to try and get a replacement pole tomorrow in Namche Bazar (our final destination tomorrow).   There must have been a defect with the pole - I’ve done this hundreds of times before without any issues.

We met for dinner at 6pm down in the lounge.  It was a quick meal followed by a briefing for tomorrow’s hike.  Tomorrow is a big day - we’ll get to 11,300’ and cover 3,000’ vertical   I went back to the room and I’m finishing the blog now at 7:30pm.   I need to get some good sleep.

So - it’s freezing cold here tonight - low 20’s.  I bought a -20 deg F sleeping bag to make sure I can get warm on the trip - for these very conditions   Hopefully it performs well tonight   I’m feeling OK right now   I have some congestion and a bit of a sore throat - but mostly good   I think I’m going to start my Diamox medication tomorrow. This medication helps your body acclimatize to the altitude changes   I took it for Kilimanjaro - hoping it will allow me to feel good through the duration of the hike.  I live at 6,000’ and often see elevations in the 8,000-11,000’ while doing treks in Colorado.   I’ve also done a number of 14,000’ peaks in Colorado.   I’m a bit worried when we’ll be sleeping over 16,000’ in a few days - I want to be prepared.

Alright - gotta shut it down.  To good health and good strength!!  Keep it strong out there!!
